1964 · Tokyo’s Games and a changing city
Tokyo 1964 beyond the stadium
Games, Paralympics and transport changes appear together in contemporary photographs.
From the unrealised 1940 Games to 1964
The Games opened on 10 October 1964. An earlier Tokyo Games had been planned for 1940 but the hosting rights were relinquished beforehand. Japan was not invited in 1948 and returned in 1952. The event belongs within an international history spanning war and postwar reintegration.
Athletes and visitors needed accommodation, transport, food and sanitation beyond competition. Hosting depended on coordinated urban services and workers rather than only the construction of stadiums.
Transport and kitchen work
The Tōkaidō Shinkansen opened on 1 October before the Games. Expressways and the monorail also document changing transport, but projects cannot all be attributed solely to the event. Their separate dates preserve longer planning processes.
Photographs of kitchens and information desks identify less visible work. Food procurement, checking, cooking and distribution sustained athletes; guidance supported visitors’ movement. These tasks enabled competition without appearing in result tables.
The November Paralympics and memory of the events
The Tokyo Paralympics followed on 8–12 November. Ending the chronology in October omits other competitors and events. Images such as wheelchair basketball document that separate sporting history within the same city.
The events presented postwar Japan internationally while changing experiences within the city. Infrastructure, workers and participants connect celebration with everyday organisation. Medals alone cannot explain those overlapping histories.
